I have a question for you, what are you doing to balance the stress in your life?

In a culture that glorifies being busy and pushing to the limit it's easy to forget that true health and fitness can only be achieved in a balance of stress and rest.

Elite athletes know that it is during rest and recovery that increased strength and conditioning takes place. Serious athletes are in bed by 10pm without compromise because they know how precious those pre-midnight hours are to rejuvenation.

We can learn a lot from this kind of lifestyle. If you work full time, are raising children, if you don't always eat the most nutritious foods or drink enough water, if you have stress in your work or relationships or if you exercise to fatigue (OK this is everyone, right?!), you are like an elite athlete in more ways than you may realize. In fact it's much worse because the athlete will consciously balance the stress/recovery to ensure a high level of performance and minimize physical breakdown.

Think of your body like a bank account. If you spend too much without putting more in, you will go broke. For some people this shows up as a broken immune system, or decreased thyroid function. For others it could present as muscle tears, night sweats, or digestive disorders.

We have two choices, decrease the stress-load or increase our rejuvenation time. My favorite rejuvenating practices are yoga, creating new recipes in the kitchen, gardening with CJ, and getting away with Matt, even for the day.
